Make it!

Giving up smoking

  • Half of all people who smoke will be killed by their smoking habit. One in four smokers will die of lung cancer
  • Every year about 114,000 smokers in the UK die from smoking related causes, 312 per day
  • Smokers under 40 have a five times greater risk of dying from a heart attack than non-smokers
  • Having between 1 and 14 cigarettes a day increases your risk of getting lung cancer by eight times
  • Smoking causes 90% of all cases of lung cancer. Cigarettes can also cause cancer of the larynx, throat, oesophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas
  • 1,000 people are admitted to hospital every day in the UK with an illness caused by smoking
  • Smoking costs you more than £ 2,000 per year every year you smoke - with inflation it could be £100,000 in 40 years

Information from www.ash.org.uk

  • 20 minutes: Your blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal
  • 8 hours: Carbon monoxide and nicotine are eliminated from the body
  • 48 hours: Risk of lung cancer stops increasing and begins to decrease
  • 2 to 21 weeks: Circulation improves
  • 3 to 9 months: Coughing and wheezing decline. Lung function increases by up to 10%
  • 1 year: Risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker
  • 15 years: Risk of a heart attack is the same as someone who has never smoked.

I only smoke a couple a day so I'll be right
If you smoke fewer than 5 per day you might feel as though your chances of getting a smoking related illness are low. Unfortunately the evidence show this isn't the case. Two years ago, a Norwegian study of 43,000 people found that people who have 1 to 4 cigarettes a day were still 3 times more likely to die of heart disease than non-smokers. A Danish report in 2002 found that just 3 cigarettes a day doubles the risk of dying early.

I'll stop by the time I'm 30, before any serious damage is done
It is often said that if you quit before you are 30 you'll avoid 90% of the risk from smoking. But that doesn't mean you should carry on until then. The longer you smoke the harder you are likely to be able to stop. Even if you're convinced you'll stop on your 30th birthday, why wait? There are loads of short term benefits to quitting that you'll see fairly quickly. You'll have more energy, look better and feel healthier. And if you smoke 20 a day you will save £2,000 every year.

I only smoke low-tar cigarettes and they're not as bad for you
There's no such thing as 'light tobacco'. the difference is in the filters. Light cigarettes have ventilation holes, so when tested by machines they record lower levels of tar and nicotine. The problem is that when people smoke lights, they do things to compensate - such as breathing more deeply or taking more puffs - so they end up being exposed to as many harmful poisons. In fact, because the smoke is taken deeper into the lungs, lights increase the risk of a cancer called adenocarcinoma, which attacks the deepest regions of the organ.

I roll my own
Well, after reading the above and realising you are smoking without any filters whatsoever, how do you feel?

An ex-smokers story

Karen, was a typical smoker. She started before she was 15, just one or two cigarettes, and then a few more. By 33 her average day started with a smoke as soon as she got out of bed, another one before work, another at morning tea, three at lunchtime... so it continued. By bedtime she had finished the packet. If she went out it became lots more.

She knew it had a hold over her and was reminded of this by her inability to stop smoking on her own, having tried willpower and patches and gum. She was always trying to conceal the smell of smoke she knew surrounded her. She knew her teeth were yellow and her hair was lank. She knew it wasn't good for her.

She knew however that once a long time ago she had stopped for 6 months and she had felt so energised and clear headed. So different. But one night, with a drink in her hand, someone had offered her one cigarette. Just that one simple cigarette had led to the whole habit back again.

Karen's catalyst came last year. After years of trying for a baby she decided on IVF. She had to give up. Her need for children far outweighed her need for smokes.

She came to see me. She hadn't had hypnotherapy before, we talked and found the reasons for her smoking, I gave her a calming exercise to do. She came back in 3 days and that day she stopped smoking.

Within 24 hours the nicotine and carbon monoxide were gone from her body and her circulation had improved. She found she could taste and smell things much better and within a month she could see and feel the difference in her skin and hair. She had more energy. After 3 months she was already feeling the benefits within her body, breathing, focus, relaxation, hormones, energy, sex life, the lot.

Your hypnotherapy programme

For casual and average smokers it is two sessions of hypnotherapy with full back up support for two months. We both want it to be successful and I use positive techniques to help achieve this.

The first session provides you with a taste of hypnotherapy and confidence to help quit. Three days to a week later the second session finishes the process.

The total price of £180 Knebworth, £190 London, is probably as much as you would have spent on cigarettes in a month. For women this is barely a couple of trips to the hairdresser. For guys a couple of nights out. You would pay this to have a small part of your house repaired. This is your life, the cost is minimal!

For long term heavy smokers, (20 plus per day) your programme will involve a third session and EFT to deal with all the unconscious smoking triggers and beliefs.

Start being aware of every cigarette you hold in your hand and the trigger points that make you want one. Start thinking of the future without cigarettes, and the benefits.
Practice the techniques often, become stronger in your resolve, this is so worthwhile, you deserve to be a non smoker!
1. Feel good, you are achieving one of the biggest goals of your life. You should feel very proud of yourself.
2. Clean out the house, let the fresh air blow through it.
3. Take in good deep breaths. Your body will be loving the fresh air. Start to clean your lungs out. Breathe deeply and often, coughing is a good sign.
4. Drink lots of water to flush the toxins out.
5. Eat lots of foods high in vitamin C, fruit, oranges and orange juice. Take extra vitamin C tablets. This helps to boost the immune system which is busy cleaning your body out.
6. Congratulate yourself each day and night. Notice the nice changes happening, such as the taste of your food, no more smoke smells in your clothes and hair, your mouth fresher, your skin softening up, comments from other people. You know you have done the right thing.
1. After a week you know you are there. The addiction has totally gone and you are feeling so much better. You will be clearer in your mind, too. You can be truely proud of yourself.
8. Keep drinking the water, that is a good habit to have all your life and helps soften and rehydrate your skin, and your hair, as well as flushing out toxins and keeping your metabolism working.
9. Keep up the Vitamin C for a month at least, if going into winter continue any tablets through to summer.
8. After 3 weeks you have set a habit, the habit of being a non smoker. You are a better and healthier person for it. You have more ready cash and more time to spend doing the things you enjoy. It is a good feeling and it is yours forever! Congratulations job well done!

At the times I would usually have a cigarette I think to myself do I want one, and the answer is NO! I can't believe I didn't do this before.
